The idea that a network owner must generate an api key for my app and get it to me somehow puts up a huge barrier to entry for app developers.  Why should a site owner have any clue of what an api token is?

You folks need to adopt the more common model where the app developer registers the app and gets a key and then gets an oauth token on behalf of the ning site owner.
